Municipal accounting is a branch of the accounting field which focuses on accounting services for municipalities such as city governments. This type of accounting can be performed by a certified public accountant (CPA) who may have pursued additional training in the area of municipal accounting.
Preparation and maintenance of financial year-wise annual financial statements like ledgers, receipt, and payments, trail balance, Balance Sheets, etc. Maintaining different Bank / Treasury accounts, Government grants received by the municipality, municipal revenues, and expenditures-related accounts on daily basis. The accountant manages the system of accounting and reporting which provides for the necessary internal controls to ensure that the transactions are properly authorized and recorded, liabilities recognized and assets are safeguarded against unauthorized use or disposition.
